Pascale Smets received her master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2006 at the University of Ghent.
After graduation she completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine at the department of Small animal medicine.
Thereafter, she completed a four year research project in Internal Medicine, focusing on renal function in dogs with Cushing’s syndrome.
During that time, her interest in Cardiology grew and after successfully obtaining her PhD degree in 2011, she started a residency at the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM-ca), subspecialty cardiology. Her clinical training consisted of 1 year of Internal Medicine at Ghent University and 2.5 years of Cardiology at the University of Munich, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland.
In 2015 she successfully passed the ECVIM-ca examination and obtained the title of “European veterinary specialist in cardiology”. Since April 2015 she is part of the Cardiology service, Department of Small animal medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University.
Since October 2016 she has been working as department head of the small animal cardiology service, Ghent University, providing teaching, clinical services and research in cardiology together with her enthusiastic team. In October 2017 she was appointed a position as tenure track professor in small animal cardiology.
