Hands – off neurologisch onderzoek: parese

Het neurologisch onderzoek bestaat uit een hands-off en een hands-on gedeelte. Het hands-off gedeelte bestaat uit het bekijken van het gangwerk, het beoordelen van het bewustzijn/gedrag en het interpreteren van pijn. Het hands-on gedeelte bestaat uit het uitvoeren van de houdingsreacties, de spinale en craniale reflexen en het nagaan van pijn. In het hands-off gedeelte is het dus belangrijk om goed te kijken naar de hond/kat. Bij het beoordelen van het gangwerk dient gelet te worden op de aanwezigheid van parese of zwakte. De ergste vorm van parese is plegie, in dit geval is er geen motoriek meer aanwezig in de poten. De oorsprong van parese/plegie kan erg verschillend zijn, zo kunnen bijvoorbeeld neuromusculaire maar ook spinale aandoeningen parese veroorzaken. Door het tonen van videofragmenten van patiënten zal uitgelegd worden hoe je de oorsprong van parese kan achterhalen. Er zal ook ingegaan worden op de mankende patiënt en hoe het verschil te maken tussen neurologische en orthopedische oorzaken van manken.

Sofie Bhatti graduated at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Ghent University in 1998. After graduation she received an assistant position at the same Faculty and developed a special interest in neurology and endocrinology. In 2006, she successfully defended her PhD thesis in endocrinology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. In 2007, she became head of the clinical neurology department. Her duties include care for patients with neurological disorders, teaching neurology (to veterinary students, interns, residents), and neurology research, with a special emphasis on canine and feline epilepsy and treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. Dr. Bhatti is an active member of the, in 2015 founded, “International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force” creating awareness for this frequent neurological disorder in dogs and cats and producing consensus statements for classification, diagnosis, treatment, outcome, medical imaging, and neuropathology of epileptic patients. Dr. Bhatti is the founder of “Epicentrum”, a center driven by experts with a passion for neurology and epilepsy, supported by science, and strengthened by years of experience (www.epicentrum.ugent.be, facebook: Epicentrum - Epilepsie hond/kat – Ugent). She is the (co-)supervisor of several PhD students and (co-)author of more than 40 publications in international journals. She gave numerous continuing education lectures for veterinary practitioners and was invited as guest lecturer (national and international) on several occasions.
