Hands – off neurologisch onderzoek: ataxie

In neurologie komt alles neer op een juiste lokalisatie van het letsel in het zenuwstelsel. Het kijken naar honden/katten kan je erg veel informatie geven. Natuurlijk is het belangrijk om ook rekening te houden met het signalement, de anamnese en de bevindingen van het algemeen klinisch en het hands-on neurologisch onderzoek alvorens definitieve conclusies te trekken. Het hands-off neurologisch onderzoek bestaat er in eerste stap vooral uit om het gangwerk van het dier te bestuderen. Dit dient best te gebeuren 1) bij honden, aan de leiband op een rechte lijn en 2) bij honden en katten los in de consultatiekamer. Enkel door het gangwerk goed te bestuderen kunnen afwijkingen zoals ataxie of coördinatiestoornissen het beste worden opgemerkt. Ataxie kan van spinale, cerebellaire of vestibulaire oorsprong zijn. Door het tonen van videofragmenten van patiënten zal uitgelegd worden hoe je het verschil kan maken tussen deze verschillende vormen van ataxie.

Sofie Bhatti graduated at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Ghent University in 1998. After graduation she received an assistant position at the same Faculty and developed a special interest in neurology and endocrinology. In 2006, she successfully defended her PhD thesis in endocrinology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. In 2007, she became head of the clinical neurology department. Her duties include care for patients with neurological disorders, teaching neurology (to veterinary students, interns, residents), and neurology research, with a special emphasis on canine and feline epilepsy and treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. Dr. Bhatti is an active member of the, in 2015 founded, “International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force” creating awareness for this frequent neurological disorder in dogs and cats and producing consensus statements for classification, diagnosis, treatment, outcome, medical imaging, and neuropathology of epileptic patients. Dr. Bhatti is the founder of “Epicentrum”, a center driven by experts with a passion for neurology and epilepsy, supported by science, and strengthened by years of experience (www.epicentrum.ugent.be, facebook: Epicentrum - Epilepsie hond/kat – Ugent). She is the (co-)supervisor of several PhD students and (co-)author of more than 40 publications in international journals. She gave numerous continuing education lectures for veterinary practitioners and was invited as guest lecturer (national and international) on several occasions.
